A Brave New Year

Happy New Year everyone — I hope you are as thrilled and excited for 2011 as I am!!!

Things are once again moving at a rapid pace now that the hustle and bustle of the holidays have passed. Silver Fish Productions, LLC is now officially organized, and the web redesign of www.theprice-movie.com is nearing completion!

Speaking of the holidays, I thought I’d share this great image courtesy of my super-hero obsessed 6 year-old son and one of his talented older sisters. Behold The Joker & Harley Quinn (as ‘snow-people’):

Pretty macabre, right? :) Makes me smile … I don’t know where on earth they get that inclination from …

Note: on the creative side, they used food coloring for the vivid colors and some muddy stones for the eyes … which after a quick whiff of their hands, they discovered to most definitely not be stones in actual fact, but something of a much more repugnant nature! UGH — although I have to admit their reaction to that disgusting revelation was fall-down funny!!! 😀

Pretty cool to have the freakiest snow-things in the neighborhood, but my kids come by it honestly; here is my jack-o-lantern from this Halloween:

Anyhow, back to The Price … I found this picture and thought it might be of some interest:

I really wanted to impress Mr. Gaiman once the animatic was finished, and decided to create special wooden presentation boxes to send the DVDs in. I was influenced by stories of how Norman Rockwell would send finished paintings to clients mounted in the heaviest, most impressive frames he could get, insisting it made a much more powerful impression and significantly reduced requests for changes or alterations. I wanted to generate the most impact possible, so I found some cool, blank wooden boxes, bought some funky hinges and hardware (had to paint them black, of course), made some vinyl stickers of the logos and created the weathered paint scheme by hand (with the help of my wonderfully supportive wife, Glynis). I lined them with black foam which held the DVD case snugly inside for its journey to Mr. Neil (and his agent), and sent them off! You may notice a slightly different cover image on the DVD cases themselves; this earlier version was replaced by the more iconic silhouette of The Black Cat that I am currently using.

That’s all for now; next time, I’ll be featuring my first video-blog installment and taking a look at some of the design work being created for the film, so make sure to check-back! I leave you with a portrait of my own resident expert on the feline persuasion as she enjoys the holidays: our cat Trinity.

The Magic Number

As I was trying not to look at the treadmill display in my local gym yesterday morning, I happened to glance down just as the time read 20:01, and I couldn’t help but smile; 2001 is definitely a magical number!

Besides being the still-amazing-to-me number of generous backers on our nail-biting Kickstarter run, it figures predominantly in my own personal filmic history as well, as 2001: A Space Odyssey was the very first movie I ever saw in a theater (and yes, that’s stretching it a bit … it was really my Dad taking his 3-year-old to the movies with him).

The treadmill in said gym is located inside the “Cardio Cinema,” which is – in all seriousness – the only reason I was able to get myself going on a regular basis! You can jog/run/bike in the protective darkness of a small theater, watching a movie cranked-up to ’11’ as you pound away at whatever form of cardio-vascular torture you prefer to self inflict. (An added bonus is that if you are prone to misstep, you can get shot across the blackened room to land in a heap somewhere without so much as a head turn from your fellow masochists. This I know for myself … )

I couldn’t help but to reflect on how many times I had tuned-out whatever movie happened to be playing on the screen, and paid attention instead to the one playing inside my head. Exercising, although not my favorite thing to do, has truly become the gateway to a creative sanctuary where I continually discover all sorts of amazing ideas and inspirations running loose! I’m still not quite sure how it all works, just that it does (for me anyway).

Over the past 5 years since the idea of creating a CG animated film of The Price first began to take shape in that mental oasis, I have never gotten tired of Neil Gaiman’s wonderful story. I started by listening to an audio recording he had pointed me to — and in support of this project has made available to everyone to listen to here, for free! (So even though we will all have to wait for the cinematic version to be finished, you can let Neil’s mesmerizing narration sweep you away until then!)

Speaking of: many of you have been asking, “So when will the movie be finished?” among other questions, so I’ll do my best to answer them here.

1) When? The production schedule of The Price will depend on a couple of things:

Firstly, the availability of those I have selected to help me produce many of the assets for the film. They all have day jobs, and while they are very eager to get started (a few expressing outright their wishes to put aside their regular, more mundane work in favor of this project), everyone still needs to put the proverbial bread on the table. They will be acting as freelance contractors, working on The Price during their ‘off’ hours, so understandably their contributions will take more time to produce.

Secondly, I am looking at several film festivals to approach with the intent of submitting the finished film in order to qualify for eventual Academy Award consideration. (Yes, I want to ‘go for the gold’ with The Price! We took a long-shot with Kickstarter — how much harder can winning an Oscar be, right???!!!) Therefore, I will also be carefully planning my production with the scheduling of these festivals clearly in mind. So the answer is … To Be Determined.

2) Now that you have a budget, what happens next? On the creative front, design comes first. I will be working with an extremely talented artist and designer who has been a close friend for over 20 years, and whom I will be featuring in my first video-blog (coming soon).

There are also a number of organizational issues to deal with, in terms of setting up a new company (or ‘entity’ as the parlance goes) specifically for the production of this film, organizing the finances and employing an accounting firm to maintain the books and assure complete transparency and accountability in the use of the precious funds all of you have made possible. I’m doing this stuff on my own dime, and want you to know (without  joking in the least) that I consider your donations to be sacred — to the point where I am almost scared to use them!

A revised website is also in the works for the new year, featuring a forum section and other improvements to provide a place for our wonderful community to ‘live’ during the making of the film.

Then there are a few legal items to attend to; Work For Hire agreements and other documents to prepare … which leads to the last big question that I have been asked many times …

3) Will The Price be available to purchase by the general public? This is a tough one, because there are legalities involved. Right now, I have the permission/rights from Neil to produce the film and to show it in film festivals. Understandably, the rights to sell something created or derived from the protected work of someone else is a much more complex matter, and one that will need time to process through the appropriate channels. Neil has been a terrific champion of my little film, and I am extremely grateful for everything he has done to help make this happen, but I also have tremendous respect for him as an artist and the creator of his material, and willingly concur that these protective processes are absolutely essential. So, again on this answer, I’ll have to ask you to stay tuned …

… and in the meantime, I will do my best to keep this site posted with interesting items as I put my head down and get on with it! But before I go, here are a few quick notes:

The Limited Edition Poster (or ‘1-sheet,’ pictured below) bonus for those who increased their pledge (well over 400 of you!!!) is going to be sent after Christmas to avoid the postal rush & all the grief and pain that goes with it.

Having said that, I realize that some people were hoping to use their poster as a type of ‘gift card’ or placeholder to give this season while waiting for the real thing to get made. To help out, I’ve posted a special version of the flyer artwork that you can use (with a blank section you can fill out and customize yourself); just look for it in the “Downloads” section of the site.

One final thing: the support from everyone was a tremendous help throughout the fundraising period — some of it coming from surprising sources! Let me share this note from none other than Patrick Rothfuss!!! (And if you seriously haven’t yet read his astoundingly great novel The Name of the Wind, you should literally stop wasting another second reading this, RUN don’t walk — I mean it!!! [think Kurt Russell in The Thing] — to your bookstore of choice, sit right down in the middle of the aisle and read to at least page 30! You can thank me later, after finishing this extraordinary first novel by a power-house storyteller … the best book I’ve read for a really long time!!!) Anyway, I was blown-away to find this for me on Facebook from ‘Pat’:

“Congrats on making it happen. I was watching it for these last couple days, thinking about maybe stepping in as a team anchor if you needed a little push right at the end. But you managed it with time to spare….”

Surreally-cool-beyond-measure!!! And on that supremely happy note, I shall ‘shut-it’ and wish you all well!!!

The Price on Kickstarter: A Rallying Cry

(Originally posted on www.nathanielhansen.com, by Christopher’s co-producer Nathaniel Hansen)

The Price on Kickstarter: A Rallying Cry

It’s been an emotional roller-coaster over the last two weeks as I’ve worked comfortably behind the scenes to spread the word about our animated film project The Price. The outpouring of support has been liberating for me as a maker and producer, and it has been especially satisfying to watch people rally around Christopher and his vision for this beautiful story by Neil Gaiman. I’m excited about what the success of this project, and others like it, could mean for independent artists the world over. The arts and technology landscape is changing so dramatically, Christopher and I both feel we’re peering off the edge of a vast precipice, staring in to an uncertain but limitless future. As my friend Richard Smyth once told me, we are, right now, in the middle of our own renaissance, our own “printing press” revolution, and with this project in particular, I can feel it.

Support has poured in from fans and converts alike. Popular sites like Wired Magazine, io9, CNN, Mashable, and many others have rallied around this project and what it stands for.

From the first time I viewed the animatic (on an iPod when Christopher was in town visiting almost 2 years ago), to where we are today, I can’t help but get a little worked up and excited. Today we made the home page again. I was pretty chuffed to see that at 9am this morning.

But this post isn’t about why the project is so great – Christopher’s art speaks for itself – this is a rallying cry about why this project, and others like it, will define truly independent media and art.

There are a lot of reasons this project is important in the history of crowd funded films, and I’ll list a few of them here for your viewing pleasure:

1) For a talented but unknown filmmaker to raise $150,000 for an animated short film via an army of strangers is practically unheard of in Hollywood. Kickstarter and other fundraising sites, are empowering artists and fans everywhere to choose for themselves the art they want to consume. One commenter and backer, Rudolf Momjian Pettersen, put it perfectly:

Art, technology and creativity will no longer be hostage to a few large companies. The “small” people will be able to get their ideas and products through with the support of other “small” people. No more monopoly!

2) Christopher’s version of The Price has and will continue to foster a robust and compassionate community. Humans crave community, attention, affection, and sharing. Despite what the news tells us, we like to be inspired and moved. We like to come together for common goals, and if kickstarter doesn’t allow this to happen in a most unique and marvelous way, I’m not sure what does. Hollywood builds and creates audience, and it does it well> But rarely does it build community. I told Christopher on the phone tonight that there are a lot of things that came together to make this project a success, but I believe that his passion, humility, and the merits of his art have made this project successful from the beginning – people LOVE the idea because they know Christopher LOVES the idea and is totally passionate about Neil’s beautiful story.

3) Christopher’s animated film of The Price is doing exactly what art is intended to do: Inspire. Over the last 4 weeks, we have witnessed an unprecidented outpouring of support for this project. People have written to Christopher to tell him of their experience with this story, or how they went out and mowed lawns to make this project happen, or how what he is doing inspired them to quit their job and go after what they always wanted to do. Pledges from $10 – $10,000 have poured in and each are every bit as meaningful to making this project a reality. As a documentary filmmaker, I’m fascinated by the story behind the pledge!

I keep refreshing the kickstarter project page for The Price, and just about every time I do we get closer to our goal of $150,000 – the most anyone has asked for on kickstarter. As Dylan once sang,”the times, they are a changin'” and I really believe this is the start of a new wave of innovation in technology and the arts. Keep a watch over the next 24 hours, and into the coming months. As a producer, I have my sights set on helping Christopher realize his creative vision, but we’ll be working hard to maintain the production blog which we believe is the best way to build and foster this new community of fans. Lets hope that first “official” post is just a day away, and that The Price is just one of many projects that buck against the Hollywood trend!

I’ll catch you on the flip side of $150k – and then we can set our sights on where we’ll gather next … Cannes? Sundance? Tribecca? The Academy? We’ve dreamed this far, and I’m looking forward to the next destination. And Christopher, thanks for taking us along with you on this wonderful journey.

How to determine the price of “The Price”

I have received several questions from potential backers asking how their donations for The Price will be utilized and how we chose the specific amount, so I thought it might be helpful to explain how that number was reached.

The budget for completing this film was based on calculating the costs involved in the following areas: creating all of the high-end 3D models (including characters, sets and environments); writing, recording and producing and original musical soundtrack; all of the post production (which is virtually the entire movie in this case: all of the rendering, complex compositing and animation in every scene, special effects, color grading, editing and sound design work); a modest budget for shooting an exclusive interview with Mr. Gaiman at his home (transportation, small video crew); hardware and software allotments; and a small legal fees budget.

In addition, I factored in the 5% fee that goes to Kickstarter, as well as up to 5% that goes to Amazon (for using their payment system, which can process international contributions). I also calculated for the Kickstarter-recommended 15% allotment used for reward fulfillment … and that is how I determined the final amount you see on the project page.

The cost would be significantly higher if I were animating the film in a more traditional way, requiring models designed and rigged to be animated, paying for the animators themselves and greatly compounding render times, data management and quality issues. I will do a large portion of the post production myself, and am partnering with professionals that I have worked with before and whose abilities I can rely upon.

I hope that helps shed some light on how these wonderful pledges are going to allow me to put all of the pieces in place to realize the vision I’ve had for going on 5 years now. Speaking of time, we’ve got a week left, and the response is continuing to grow rapidly, so please keep doing everything you can to share The Price with others!!!

15 Days to Go!!

I wanted to send an update this morning to thank every one of you who has pledged to this project — you are all wonderful!!! (You’ve not only helped with your financial contributions, but with your tremendous words of support and encouragement.) I am just blown-away by the shared passion we have for Neil’s marvelous story, and by the fact that you all want to see it just as much as I want to make it!!!

I know many of you have been following along, getting excited by seeing the numbers climb towards our goal, and sometimes feeling anxious when nothing seems to change for awhile — this is normal. My good friend and trusted advisor, Nathaniel (who has worked on several Kickstarter projects, including his latest: ‘The Elders’ www.theeldersfilm.com) has reassured me that it is very common for projects to start out with high interest levels and go on to finish their funding period successfully … but in between, there usually is a “trough,” a period when things tend to stagnate a little.

‘The Price’ has enjoyed an incredible amount of momentum: as of this writing, we have already achieved 41% of our goal! But over the last few days, things have slowed down… and to get them moving again, I have a favor to ask:

Find 1 more person to help pledge their support. If each one of you would do that, we could double our progress and give ‘The Price’ the renewed momentum needed to get across that finish line!!! (Remember that all Kickstarter projects are ‘all-or-nothing’ proposals: unless the entire goal is raised, no money changes hands.)

Many of you have already asked how they can help spread the word, so we’ve made some basic promotional materials available on www.theprice-movie.com. Just look under the new tab marked “downloads” and you’ll find a flyer you can print & distribute, some cool desktop wall papers (coming soon), and an ‘Electronic Press Kit’ (EPK). This last item contains an official press release and images that can be sent to your favorite website or posted on a blog.

(For example, I’m a big fan of www.aintitcoolnews.com, so I sent ‘Head Geek’ Harry Knowles a letter and some exclusive conceptual art to try and entice him to post something about ‘The Price.’ So far no luck … but maybe if a few of you add your voices as well, he might! You can contact him at: harry@aintitcool.com)

There are more interviews coming out (including one with Wired.com’s Geek Dad tomorrow and hopefully another with MTV news as well), but the more eyes we can get on this project, the better! Anything and everything you can do will help — like this terrific blog post from Ed White (which was retweeted by Neil himself!) http://post.ly/1C7xX

Just 1 more person to pledge! If we can all get just 1 more, we’ll get this project moving fast enough to achieve our goal before the Dec. 1st deadline!!! My deepest thanks to everyone for believing and for all of your positive energy!!!

Chart-topping cellist Zoë Keating on board for “The Price”!!!

I’m really excited about this bit of news…and think you will be too!!! If you don’t know her work, Zoë Keating is an award-winning recording artist, cellist, composer, and performer who has been topping the billboard classical charts this year and was #1 on iTunes classical with her latest album “Into the Trees.”

I’ll have more details as things progress here on the blog (http://www.theprice-movie.com/production-blog) as — fingers crossed!!! — production gets underway later in the year. I hope you’ll be as thrilled as I am; she’s an amazing addition to the project!!! You can learn more about Zoë by visiting her website here: http://www.zoekeating.com/ or follow her on twitter via @zoecello

Thanks for all your support in continuing to spread the word!!!

600 and counting …

Congrats to John Spink, our 600th backer so far!!! And additional congrats to all of our new Associate Producers out there, including one who is a comic writer/filmmaker himself, flying out to LA to sell his own feature right now, who said, “… my absolute pleasure … I know how tough it is. Best of luck hitting the rest of the total, man.” Talk about building your karmic bank account!!!

And then … while I was at the gym today a GI-NOR-MOUS donation-bomb hit, increasing the total by a staggering amount … I’m pretty sure people must’ve thought I’d torn a major muscle group or something, as “freaking-out” doesn’t even come close to describing what happened to me!!! 😀

Add to that the hundreds of donations, big and small from everyone … I hate to use the “A-Word,” but it really is amazing, you guys!!! I have been absolutely overcome by your kind words and sincere expressions for the success of The Price, so much so that I wanted to share a few with you:

Cap’n Snowpea says:
I read the story last night and almost cried (I am owned by several housecats). I gave my felines a hug and decided to kick in a share. Go, Christopher, GO!

Max Peterson says:
I’m definitely looking forward to seeing this made! As my next two paychecks come in, I’ll pledge more. My personal goal: pledge $150!
There is a warm place in my heart for you, Christopher. Best of luck!

ArdRhi says:
Christopher, I couldn’t help but be moved when I saw this project. Partly because of the story, true, but partly because of the medium. Since I was disabled 4 years ago, comic art has become the way I have been able to reach out and express myself most effectively. I’ve had to overcome a lot of obstacles, but it’s the one medium that has lent itself to the particular mix of restrictions I have. This project resonates with something very important in myself, and I’m very glad to support it.

And on and on they go … I have never met most of you, and yet the kindness and positivity is like a warm, wonderful tidal wave that keeps flowing and flowing! And everyone says, without fail, that this is their very favorite of Neil’s short stories, and that is exactly the same reason why I was so captivated by The Price: I loved the theme of redemption … it was a chance to design some really cool monsters … and I love cats too, so really it was win-win-win! 😀

Look for some really great new interviews and postings to feature The Price coming in the near future; we’ve added a “Media” tab on the site’s nav bar to help you find links to many of these. And I hope you’ll keep in mind that despite the wonderful success so far, I still need all of your help! Please keep Tweeting, Blogging, Emailing and telling your friends & family about The Price, and we’ll ALL be screaming like wild-men/women come December 1st!!! IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN!!!

What … a … day!!!

Unbelievable … it’s been an unprecedented couple of days for this project!!! As you know, I’m in the middle of a historic Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for an animated version of Neil Gaiman’s wonderful short story The Price. It’s historic in Kickstarter terms, because no other project has set out to try and raise this much. There are a lot of cool projects that have raised much more (for example), but I wanted to follow the site’s mantra that you should ask for whatever it will take to actually deliver your project. Kickstarter is an “all or nothing” proposition: if we earn 95% and the clock runs out … no money will change hands. Scary – but EXCITING, right???!!!

And about the amount I need to raise: in comparison to other independent or studio productions, a budget of $150,000 is a drop in the bucket! But it’s still a boatload of money, and there were lengthy discussions between myself and my good friend Nathaniel Hansen on exactly “how much” to try and raise. In addition, there is the pressure of the very real stewardship I feel to utilize these funds as carefully as possible. We determined that this story was worth every cent that could be mustered-up, and that I didn’t want to short change anyone (myself or the many generous fans) by taking short-cuts. I also wanted to be able to offer the other artists who would be involved along the way some kind of compensation for their time & talent – and not have to call in ‘friend-favors.’ Artists are people too, man!!!

So, the project launched, and support began with wonderful pledges and comments …

and then…

… I received a donation from Neil. Himself. The pledges started to go CRAZY!!! I immediately sent a text to Nathaniel saying something must have happened. I checked on Twitter and noticed that Neil (@neilhimself) had posted the following:

I checked. He did. And what a post!!!

“HE BLOGGED!!” I texted, my fingers shaking. And then, a few minutes later we were privileged with an auto tweet, and all manner of insanity broke loose on the kickstarter pledge page!!!

In just 4 hours, we went from 100 amazing backers, to over 300…

There is real power out there, and Mr. Gaiman has a huge chunk of it.

I’ve been reflecting continually on Neil’s own generosity throughout this entire process; to have his wonderful message sent out to fans from his blog was as humbling as it was stunning — reading it was like being in a movie scene, but far better than what I could have imagined!!! My wife and I read it over and over, almost getting a little ‘misty,’ and not just because we’re big saps (which we are), but because it was just so very … kind. What a genuinely kind thing to do — by anyone’s standard — but even more so when I consider how busy Neil is with so many, many things on his plate; the whole thing becomes slightly surreal.

I spoke with a writer from Wired.com who had posted an article this morning about The Price. He had made a pledge as well; after I thanked him, he said something I wanted to share that really demonstrates how Neil Gaiman has distinguished himself from so many other ‘celebrities.’ Said Chuck Lawton,

‘To tell the truth, I was particularly enamored with your kickstarter video; I just had a similar geeking-out experience over meeting Neil this past weekend as my wife and I were at the American Gods event at the House on the Rock. Neil was extremely gracious and inviting while hosting this event. John Kovalik, artist and illustrator of Dork Tower who was also at the event said it best when he said, “Anyone in a creative profession needs to witness the care, dedication, humor and respect with which @neilhimself treats his readers.”‘

I agree 1000%. Surreal.

What’s funny is that Nathaniel had warned me the Kickstarter process itself would be surreal (he had a documentary film funded via Kickstarter in May). It really is an emotional roller-coaster to experience such random acts of kindness and faith from other people. I find myself walking around the house in a happy stupor, marvelling at all of this good will, so freely given.

But yes, reality beckons: this film project still has a long way to go before we’re even close to our goal, but the proverbial wildfire seems to be catching!!! I hope you will continue to follow our progress over the next 25 days, and beyond…

and, of course … to everyone: THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Our Story featured on Blastr.com

Earlier today SyFy’s news site Blastr.com published a story about our effort to raise $150k over the next 28 days (gulp!). We need all the help we can get from fans on this one. We’ve been trying to take traditional routes for funding and hit way too many roadblocks and strange ideas along the way (including suggestions of rewriting it and turning it in to a feature!).

Well, since none of those options would allow us to remain true to Christopher’s vision, we took the project to the tubes. We believe in the power of crowdfunded projects, and we’re excited to make history on kickstarter. Spread the word – just 28 days and counting.

“The Price” by Neil Gaiman—A Kickstarter Drive (TOR.com)

Brit Mandello over at TOR.com has written a wonderful article which (in our opinion) really nails the mission of this kickstarter project: To create a film by fans for fans and to do it without the restraints of traditional financing/production/distribution models. We’re glad people are picking up on this, as it’s absolutely our mission to show how this could be the next vehicle of crowdsourced fundraising. It’s going to be a gruelling 28 days (as of this posting) but we’re hopeful the fans will really come to love what we’re doing!

Check out the rest of Brit’s article here.
